How Our Kids Use Calendars and Why It Matters in a Montessori Home

Calendars play an important role in our home, especially for our children.

As a Montessori family, we value tools that help kids access information independently. Time can be an abstract concept for children, but a physical calendar makes it visible and tangible. Instead of asking repeatedly when something will happen, our kids can walk up to the wall and see it for themselves.

In their rooms, our calendars are used to count down to birthdays, holidays like Christmas, school field trips, and special events. They mark days off school, sports practices, and family visits. This process gives them ownership over their schedules and a sense of anticipation that feels grounded rather than anxious.

More importantly, it helps them understand the bigger picture of time.

They begin to see how days become weeks and how weeks become months. They can trace patterns, notice routines, and understand how events relate to one another. This builds patience, responsibility, and confidence. Time is no longer something that happens to them. It is something they can see, understand, and engage with.

Because the calendar is thoughtfully designed and visually calm, it does not overwhelm their space. It becomes part of their environment in the same way a bookshelf or desk would. Functional, supportive, and familiar.

For us, this is one of the most meaningful uses of our work. Watching our own children use these calendars to navigate their world reinforces why we started making them in the first place.

They are not just planners. They are tools for understanding life as it unfolds.
